HELP – Young Animal Supplements

Dear friends,

I'm posting here to ask for your help in identifying the origin of various materials included with Young Animal – Hakusensha, which would help me move forward with my Berserk collection. I’ll post some photos of items along with a few guesses, and I hope you can help me figure out, based on your expertise, whether I’m on the right track and if it’s worth trying to collect all these different pieces…
Just one request: I'm only interested in artworks created by Miura and never republished, since I already have a nice collection at home and I’m just missing a few more items… obviously nothing impossible to get or reserved for the gods! So let’s get started…

What is this “newspaper”? Do you know? I think it’s an extra edition bundled with Volume 39 from 2017… Does it contain original Miura illustrations inside?

This is a poster included with Young Animal in 2016;

If I understood correctly, this is a supplement to Young Animal from 2012 It celebrates the release of the first film in the Golden Age trilogy with an original poster created by Miura, which also serves as the cover for the first DVD… The question is: what’s inside these two specials? Original drawings by Miura? Art from the studio that made the film?

Then, there’s this double-sided poster… does anyone know where it was published?

This should be a Young Animal supplement from 2015… But what’s inside, what does it celebrate? Are there any special chapters never published elsewhere? I don’t think so…

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NV85peptXKxPVN0IIycpbzl3m0RwFfL0/view?usp=sharing

Same question for this supplement (nice!) from Young Animal 2011… Does the book contain already published or unpublished chapters? Again, I don’t think they’re new…

And this supplement (no idea what year it’s from) – what’s inside? Original content or already published stuff?

Then, these two – I have no clue what they are… can you help me figure it out?

Same with this one – no idea what it is…

But I think this is a poster made for the release of the 1996 anime, right? Is it an original by Miura?

Finally, this poster – where was it included? Which year? It looks like it’s double-sided…

Thanks, friends! Any answer is appreciated. You and I love Berserk and Miura’s art! I’ll be waiting for lots of replies!

It was given away in the street by YA idols to promote the release of volume 39. I have like 5 copies, it's got very little value. It most notably features volume 39's cover and a composition using many pictures from the manga, but nothing "never seen elsewhere".

This is a poster included with Young Animal in 2016

It was released to promote the 2016 anime, what's most notable about it is its A1 format (560 x 840 mm). It's the biggest Berserk poster that was ever included in Young Animal to my knowledge. It's really easy to find online on Japanese websites like Yahoo! Japan auctions. It's inexpensive.

There are seven of these bonus booklets, they just contain parts of the manga, no exclusive artwork.

Then, there’s this double-sided poster… does anyone know where it was published?

It was published in one of the original MyBestRemix (MBR) convenience store volumes, I forgot which one. It's technically not exclusive because the Wyald illustration was also sold as a proper painting reproduction at the Berserk Café, while the other one was produced by Miura to advertise the 1997 anime series and was featured in a B2-sized poster at the time.

These aren't the same thing. Some are part of that group of seven booklets I mentioned earlier, the other I think is a booklet that was released after the series had been on a somewhat long hiatus. I'm not entirely sure about the exact details and don't care to check, but it's only got episodes of the manga inside, no special art.

Same answer. No special art.

Same with this one – no idea what it is…

This is just an issue of Young Animal with a cover illustration from the 2016 anime. Issue n°15 of 2016. It's the one that included that big A1 poster, as you can see on the cover.

But I think this is a poster made for the release of the 1996 anime, right? Is it an original by Miura?

No, it was made to promote the movie trilogy. Yes it's an original from Miura. It was published in Young Animal n°3 of 2012. It was also sold as a painting reproduction during the Berserk Café event.

Finally, this poster – where was it included? Which year? It looks like it’s double-sided…

These are the mini-posters included inside volume 25 of Berserk. A real fan of Berserk would already know that as they would own all the volumes. :azan:

Thank you so much! You were amazing! Compared to you, no one is a real fan of berserk, I admit! So I have to take a maximum of 3 posters... Did I forget something? I have all the artworks, special YA issue of the 20th anniversary and the one of the last chapter of miura, with frame of the last issue of miura, calendar of 1998 and card game, a transparent folder plus some bandai action figures... what do you think is missing? are the phone cards of any interest? maybe the stamps? by any chance the artworks from the anime and the movie trilogy are of any interest, do they have Miura drawings inside?
thanks in advance!

No problem.

Well that's a tough question, in theory a lot of things could be said to be missing. I can't really determine that for you. The one thing I'll say, which might be so obvious you didn't mention it, is that you really ought to own all the volumes of the actual manga. Miura was a mangaka first and foremost, that was his preferred form of art, and thus it's where his best artwork is found. Paintings and the like were only a side thing for him.

are the phone cards of any interest?

To some extent, a few of them have unique illustrations.

by any chance the artworks from the anime and the movie trilogy are of any interest, do they have Miura drawings inside?

I don't own the movie trilogy's artbook, I have no interest in it. I presume that's what you're asking. The collector's editions for the 2012 movies' and 2016 series' Blu-Rays all feature bonus artwork from Miura, so that might be worth it to you.

es of course, I have all the volumes, both the rare Italian collection, because I'm Italian, called in slang "sottiletta" (I don't know if you know what it is...) and the deluxe; even so many things are missing? then which would be the original drawn pnone cards? then, do you mean the DVDs of the trilogy or of the two anime series from the 2000s? Anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you!

That's great! Yeah I know about the Italian edition.

Like I said it's really hard to draw a line somewhere... For example, there's the color pages Miura did for the manga. Some are included in the artbooks but you may want to have them within the manga proper, in which case you'd need to get something like the recent Glénat "Prestige Edition" or the old Japanese MBR volumes, which you might want to get for the posters anwyay.

Then there's various illustrations that are less common than others, for examples the ones he did for the Dreamcast game. There's that artbook, plus promotional posters both for the game itself and its soundtrack. There's even more obscure posters, including one of Guts and Casca that was done to promote the 1997 anime that I would say is quite rare. Then you have the painting of the group with Azan from 2001 (released first as a postcard then in big format for YA's 20th anniversary), or Miura's charcoal drawing of Guts from the special issue of Animal House.

There's unpublished ink drawings from old issues of the magazine too, and artwork that was changed between its publication in the magazine and the volume. Beyond that, the ultimate stuff is unique signed illustrations that were done for specific people or occasions. I'm not going to write a comprehensive list but you get the idea. There's lots of stuff out there. And that's just for Miura's artwork, but did you know he sculpted some figures for Art of War? Busts of Guts, Griffith and Casca, and a full figure of Puck, each available in two colors.

Without getting into all that, if you've already got the Exhibition's catalog alongside the DC game's artbook and the Illustrations File artbook (plus maybe the Warcry postcard book), I'd say you're already good for the most part. Regarding the telephone cards, there's a half-dozen that I'd say are worth getting for the artwork itself, with a few that are specifically unique and therefore very rare.

The three movies, which were released in 2012 and 2013, each had a collector's edition Blu-ray Disc (not DVD) that came in with an illustration from Miura. The first is Guts, the second is Griffith and the third is Femto. These were all reproduced elsewhere at various times, most notably as painting reproductions sold at the Big Berserk Exhibition.

There was only one TV series done in 2016-2017, which had a collector's edition released in 4 sets of BDs. Each had a rigid cardboard illustration featuring a new illustration from Miura. Here they are below (I hope you appreciate the effort).

Collector-MiuraIllustrations.jpg

The "memorial edition" (released in 2022) was a repackaged version of the movie trilogy with around 30 minutes of additional content and various touch-ups, but it featured no artwork from Miura.

"exhaustive" is not enough!!! but you wrote me a synoptic essay of berserk, not a post! you are my sensei from now on! thank you! I bother you for the last time... since for now it is impossible for me to get miura's autographs I would like to go deeper into the matter of the dreamcast game... which version should I get to secure the poster, there are so many around and I don't know how to do it... then, I think I understood which rare phone card you are talking about, it is the commemorative one of happy new year, right? in future i'd like to upgrade my forum status, but not now, sorry! i mean the needs of community, that are best ever, but if you could send me in pvt the image blocked i'll yours evere! Finally, for the cards of the 2016-2017 series can you suggest me an edition to buy? eternally thank you!

Haha, you're welcome, glad I could help.

I would like to go deeper into the matter of the dreamcast game... which version should I get to secure the poster, there are so many around and I don't know how to do it...

Well I want to emphasize that you should get the DC game's artbook if you don't have it already. (Here's what it looks like for reference). You'll get those illustrations in there alongside a bunch of others. That aside, there are two posters like I said, one with the composite painting of Guts & Casca, Rita & Puck, Balzac & the Nun on the sides, the other with Puck sitting atop of a broken beherit from which a mandragora is sprouting. They weren't sold to consumers, instead they were given to stores to advertise the release of the game and soundtrack. Therefore there aren't many of them and you'll typically find them being resold online on their own, but they're not very easy to find these days.

As far as buying the DC game itself, the Japanese version is the only one worth having as far as I'm concerned (well I say that but I have the US/UK versions too). Some shops ran a limited edition version that had Puck stickers and a mini-calendar that you can find online without too much difficulty, if you're interested.

then, I think I understood which rare phone card you are talking about, it is the commemorative one of happy new year, right?

Well there's a bunch like I said, I don't know about one for the new year. Miura did send new year cards (as in postcards, not telephone cards) but that's a whole other thing and sadly unattainable for you.

Finally, for the cards of the 2016-2017 series can you suggest me an edition to buy? eternally thank you!

If you're lucky like me you can buy the illustrations by themselves on the cheap from someone reselling them. Otherwise you'd need to get the full bundle, which was quite expensive when it released. Something like 20,000 yen per box, so 80,000 yen total. Obviously I can't recommend you to spend that money on it, especially since the 2016 anime is awful. At 5000 yen per BD box I'd say it's reasonable. Not sure what else I can say, it's the Japanese collector's edition and has the illustrations I posted at the front, so they're easy to recognize.

Yes I have the artwork of the DC game! Thank you so much, you were perfect! I'll update you on my progress if I don't bore you! P.S. but do you also have something signed by Miura or in any case rare? I'll be patient, maybe one day I'll have an opportunity to get close to something like that! Thanks again!
