I looked around and couldn't find one, so voila ^_^ ... the topic on The Descent sort of fueled my interest because there were a lot of good comments on there.

To be honest, I prefer psychological horrors or intelligent ghost/ supernatural stories over mindless zombie/ gore movies. I mean, the latter are fun, but can get boring for me these days, except a few like FIDO!! I'm a big fan of Asian horror movies too. Some movies I like ...

I watched the last ten minutes of this on youtube and it absolutely destroyed me. I couldn't get that scene out of my head for over a week. It's for this very reason I won't be watching any more of Takashi Miike's horror films. The guy's so good he's going to keep me away from his movies for life. :void:

Takashi's movies are interesting, and some of them fall into the same predictable loop. With Audition, the last half hour is really worth the entire flick. His short film Box was pretty good, actually 3/ Three is a decent anthology of 3 horror stories put together by 3 different directors. Amongst his movies, the only duds for me are Visitor Q, Ley Lines, and Imprint (big disappointment).

I don't know what good horror is, not that I'm up tight about it, but I enjoy good stories along with it. So the slasher flicks never really added up to me at all, the TCSM movies was the closest and those feel apart after the first one. But here are my picks.

Haha The Gate! Damn I haven't seen that in a while, i must have been 12 or so I first (and last) watched The Gate. It wouldn't hold up today I bet, but I do have some great memories of it, though very vague, hazy memories. Like the classic moster under the beg grabbing your leg, and those little clay people!

Hell yes! The Gate. Totally horror cheese. Stabbing the eye in the hand always makes me squirm.

Ok, just finished Anti-Christ and it left me with images that won't leave my mind anytime soon. :judo: It's pretty graphic.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some, and probably a good one too, like so good I blocked it out.

On that note, Zombies are #1 for me, since I actually suffered from zombiephobia for years. When I was little, my dad and my cousin teased me so bad about zombies one night that I was irrationally scared of them throughout the rest of my childhood and adolescence. I thought they were coming to eat me in my sleep, and every rustle outside my window was the slow shamble of a zombie that would soon sink its teeth into my flesh and eat me alive. Great way to go to bed every night!

This naturally made me both frightened and fascinated by zombie movies. I didn't want anything to do with them at first, but as time went by, I was drawn to them by my fear and curiosity. I used to barricade myself in my room, literally, on Halloween and watch Night of the Living Dead like it was really happening. Zombie movie viewings like that, and hours of therapy provided by Resident Evil games (which could really scare the fuck out of me, more than most people), finally cured me. Sadly, I don't watch a lot of zombie movies anymore, they don't have the same power over me, and for the most part they're a dime a dozen shitfests (I've seen Zombie Honeymoon... oh God). Anyway, I know first hand what makes zombies scary, it's psychological, and fast moving ADD gore porn zombies aren't.

I haven't seen The Gate and Wicked City - I'll check it out this weekend ^_^

Zombie Honeymoon ... sounds good haha ... I'll pick it up just for the cheese factor.

What do you guys think of recent releases? Uhhmmm Mirrors, Paranormal Activity, that movie with Adrian Brody in it that came out recently (I haven't checked it out) ... and such? No impact eeehhh.
 
Man, that's a good story! I hope they don't botch things up. Del Torro has a good track record, but the only good things he's done are Pan's, Hellboy (if I'm very partial), and The Devil's Backbone.
 
Wow, it's been 2+ years since we posted on this one. Speaking of At The Mountains Of Madness, (as we know) they shafted the project but there are hopes that it's been revived, last I heard so let's see if it gets made, with or without Tom Cruise. I don't mind Cruise, he's done well in War Of The Worlds or Minority Report or Collateral.

Anyone watched any good Horror movies since your last post on here or recently? Going through my library and here's a sort of update ...

Kill List - Brit Thriller/ Horror circling the story of a hitman, DAMN good. Recommend watching it with subs for some of the dialog sounds muddled. Great soundtrack too.

Sinister - a little refreshing compared to the recent crop of Poltergeist~ish movies starring Ethan Hawke and it came out last year.

A Serbian Film - gruesome and pretty frakked up. That's all I can say.

Rare Exports - Santa, eating babies? Haha and surprisingly well made!

Let Me In - refreshing original, not the remake Let The Right One In. One of the few movies I re-watched twice. Really really good.

I Saw The Devil - this one's on Netflix, cannot recommend it enough for fans of Oldboy.

The Last Exorcism - I didn't think it was as bad as people made it out to be, the ending was fun to watch. Recently saw a trailer for a sequel, uuhhmmm looks meh but who knows.

Piranha 3D - I like it a lot cos it knows what kind of movie it aims to be and succeeds at it. Had a blast watching it at the theater.

Insidious - for the flak the movie got, it's not THAT bad. Kinda curious how Mama compares. I thought the rescue sequence at the end was cool.

Which reminds me, someone last week (while I was picking up a few Asian Horror flicks at a local store) told me the Fright Night remake isn't all that bad, what do you guys think? I'm on the bend whether or not I want to see it.

I'm gonna be late for lunch, gotta run!

I don't think it's as bad as what people say it is i watched it awhile ago tho so can't recall it so well Lol but i did enjoy it! obviously not as fun as the original tho i love that movie!

Oh yeah? That's cute. Try watching this movie. It's far more mentally fucked up than A Serbian Film. Not QUITE as violet or perverse, but it's pretty deranged for the time it came out.

I recently watched The Loved Ones which I highly recommend. I haven't watched Martyr's in a long time or Inside. Man, Inside had me grinding my teeth in a scene, I still remember that moment. Talking about em makes me want to re-watch em.

The original one didn't do anything for me.

Sadly, the remake had some scenes that scared the shit out of me.

It was surprisingly a lot more fun than expected, it's very conscious of the type of movie it is and doesn't try to be more than that. And not that it really matters but The Thing (2011) is a prequel to Carpenter's The Thing, not a remake.

I watched Pandorum not incredibly long ago and enjoyed it.

This is awfully late, but this made me see that terrible movie in a whole new light.

I mainly end up watching foreign language horror movies for some reason. I've seen mostly Japanese ones as I've majored in the language, so I'll put them in their own category:

Ju-On (particularly liked the first and second films)
Ring
Tales of the Unusual (though only the first story is technically horror)
Urban Legend Story: Hikiko (The whole thing is in CGI, and yet it scared me >_>)
Noroi
One Missed Call (Series, though my fave is the final movie)

There's also a few series of Japanese horror shorts of about 5 minutes each, like Goosebumps From Japan, Scary Stories from Japan, Real Life Scary Stories, etc.

I've also seen a number of Korean horror films, though the one that made the biggest impression on me was R-Point (it's about South Korean soldiers in the Vietnam War). I also really liked The Orphanage (Spanish).

Yeah, check out the original flick cos what you saw was the prequel. In my opinion, the original is a lot better than the prequel.

ASF is definitely not a movie you could watch with family around :carcus:

Cool beans, I'll check it out one of these nights after work. And yeah, you're right about The Thing's prequel, I just jokingly called it a remake for obvious reasons ^_^. The soundtrack on the original is solid.

I watched Pandorum when it had come out, liked it but didn't fall in love with it cos my expectations were high and the monsters weren't as scary as they're shown to be (like the way they moved around wasn't threatening enough). The concept is pretty good, even the end, bad execution aside.

Very nice list. Haven't checked out R-Point or those Japanese short movies. Speaking of K-horror, have you seen Acacia, The Tale of Two Sisters, Voices, Uninvited?

Noroi's definitely under-rated although it's influenced by a few movies like Blair Witch Project, Ju-On or Ringu. That journalist would crack me up with his reactions and the end is a bit spooky.

Have you watched any of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's flicks (Cure, Pulse, Loft, Seance)? His style is pretty brooding, atmospheric and some cool ideas (Cure or Pulse).

I've had a look at A Tale of Two Sisters, but I ended up with no idea what was going on. :troll: Acacia, The Uninvited and Voices are still on my to-watch list.

I have seen Voice though (different film :guts:) which is part of the 5-film Whispering Corridors series. I find these a bit dull/slow, but that's just me.

That journalist guy was quite funny. ='D There are other Japanese films in that mold too, like The Unidentified, The Mountain Incident and Shirome. I wasn't blown away by any of these though, perhaps because Noroi made me used to that kind of narrative.

I've definitely heard of most of those. I've seen Pulse, and totally agree about the style. Loft always looked pretty interesting, though I haven't seen it yet.

Now I'm thinking about horror again, more films are coming to mind.

Dark Water - This is based on the story Floating Water that appeared in Koji Suzuki's book of horror short stories (also called Dark Water). The film version has a different ending to the book. It's pretty ...

Uzumaki (How could I forget that one. I read the manga and everything :???:) The film was apparently released before the manga ended, so the ending is different. I loved the cinematography and the eccentric soundtrack. (Was seriously pumped when I found the soundtrack online one day).

Kaidan - This one has a historical setting. It's part of the J-Horror Theatre series, which also contains Yogen/Premonition, which I really want to see.

...I was going to watch Audition but chickened out halfway through, knowing what was coming. ='D

Add Wishing Stairs to that list, just about decent. A Tale Of Two Sisters I thought was darn good - gripping, horrific, keeps you emotionally invested till the end and throws a curve-ball at you. If anything I think the ending spelt out what exactly happened. I wish they didn't do that and instead dropped hints for us here or there.

Since Kiyoshi's movies were brought up in the thread, I had to re-watch em, so I did - Cure, Pulse and Retribution - the latter is so under-rated.

Thanks for the recommendations, keep em coming! I checked out The Red Shoes last night and it was surprisingly good/ enjoyable. The whole mother-daughter relationship and their scenes together in the end were horrific, especially the end. I liked the leading the audience on or ambiguity about closure that it leaves the viewer with.

I'm currently looking for Dear Friend, The Wig and Cinderalla. I'll hit up Into The Mirror this week, didn't know Mirrors was a re-make of that.

Kaidan's a classic, it's pretty formidable in giving out genuine scares even today. Didn't know Dark Water was based on a book and wait, different ending (?) - color me interested. I love the fee and tone of the movie a lot, the same with Ringu or Ju-On. It's that feeling of dread, amplified by watching it in the dark on a big screen : p. Try Long Dream if you liked Uzumaki, not as scary but fun. Let me know what you think of Kiyoshi's other movies.

I'm a sucker for Horror and get bloody scared. But it's fun for me when I overcome that.
