This site
used be a part of the Links section of the Black Sun Over Midland
homepage but with the popularity of the recently released Dreamcast
game console system from Sega and an almost never-ending stream
of emails of Berserk fans asking about the game's details (-_^),
I decided to set up a page devoted entirely to it, with the latest
news and game details like plot and character guides. This is
obviously a work in progress, with the news coming in almost
everyday and sorting them out while doing some translations so
please stop by every week as I try to provide the latest information
about the game.
For the past
news on the Berserk Dreamcast game, please to go the Game News
Archive.
Storyline
In a region
ravaged by years of wars and famine, something is sweeping across
the land that has struck fear among the peoples and the nobles
alike. Even the armies have dreaded this approaching pestilence.
The threat comes from a horde of parasitic plants which, when
they attach themselves to their unsuspecting victims, rob their
hosts of their free will while their bodies go through a grotesque
transformation as the parasites take over them. The parasites
then whisper to their hosts to do their bidding. The pictures
below demonstrate the fate of those unfortunate people who become
infected.
These parasites
are led by one named Mandragora. Not
much is known about Mandragora and its minions except for the strange
voice that rose from the ground as it uprooted itself and the
aggressiveness of their attacks in search of a host. And now Guts must
face these creatures and risk his own life to protect his loved one.
Note
that while Miura was involved in developing the storyline for the game,
the storyline itself is considered a side story. Therefore, do not
expect this to be found anywhere in the manga. Also, even though Casca
is wearing a monk's habit, she is NOT a cleric!
Character
Guide
Note that
the spelling of the names used here are based on what the game
developers are using. So in that spirit, I'm adopting the same
system for the game only.

Guts
He is one
of the only two people to survive the solar eclipse massacre
at the hands of God Hand's minions. He now wanders to exact revenge
against them, armed with the Dragonslayer sword.
|
|
Casca
Her experience
during the massacre left her so severely traumatized that it
drove her to madness.
|
|
Puck
He is Guts's
diminutive fairy partner who lives in his fanny pack. Very cheerful
and easily elated by nature, he can be regarded as the series's "mood maker" or the one who
eases the tension.
|
|
Rita
A traveling
performer, perhaps of gypsy descent. An adept knife handler,
she made this talent as part of her performances.
|
|
Balzac
The tyrannical
ruler of the land infested by Mandragora's minions.
|
|
Eliza
The caregiver
for the the victims of Mandragora. A woman of strong religious
faith and compassion, she is opposed to Balzac's atrocity toward
those afflicted.
|
|
Dunteth
He is the
leader of the underground resistance movement against Balzac.
|
|
Job
Rita's traveling
companion. A gentle giant of a man, he used to assist Rita in
doing her street performances until the townspeople found out
that he's possessed by one of Mandragora's minions (it's that
thing on his chest).

Nosferatu
Zodd
One of the
oldest living servants of God Hand, Zodd makes an appearance
in this game. Note that in his "Minotaur" form, he
now only has one horn (see Vol.17 of the manga).
|
The Game
Bosses
These
are the characters whom you will face in the game before you
can proceed to the next level. In the gaming circles, these characters
are referred to as "bosses". Note that these are from
the import version of the game. They are most likely to appear
in the domestic version also.
|
Job
He is
the first one that you will have to fight as soon as you enter
the city. He will use his whip-like right arm and his club-like
left arm to destroy you. Unfortunately, you have to kill him
to advance in the game. Click on the image for a full view.
|
|
The Niko Tree
This
used to be a boy named Niko, who is now possessed by Mandragora
and under Eriza's protection. Its main weapons are its supersonic
sound blast and arms like a Venus's flytrap to pound you. Click
on the image for a full view.
|
|
Nosferatu Zodd
Yes,
you get to fight him, too. But beware! Zodd is incredibly fast
and agile despite his size and he will not hesitate to gore you
with his horn nor slam you head-first to the ground. Plus he
can absorb a LOT of damage hits from you.
|
|
Balzac (First Transformation)
This
is what he looks like when he took the potion. He is armed with two big
halberds which he swings with ease. But his most potent weapon is
SPEED. He becomes a blur when he tries to position himself for an
attack. (click on the image)
|
|
The Casca Tree
Like
Niko, Casca became possessed when she craddled an infected baby. This
tree uses supersonic sound blasts, leafy arms and hair and toxic oral
secretions to inflict damage. Click on the image and you'll Caska on
its head.
|
Coming soon |
Balzac
(Final Form)
This is Balzac's
form after God Hand granted his wish. Think of Cerberos from
Greek mythology but with six heads and faces and you get the
picture.

Game GD-ROM
Case
Here's what the GD-Rom case looks like:
Front
Cover
Back Cover
Note that
the case itself is much thicker than the usual CD case. Also
included in this package is a special sticker sheet featuring
the SD rendition of Puck, as well as Guts's bleeding branded
mark (see below):
And unlike
the domestic releases, whose manuals come in black and white
print, the Berserk: Millennium Falcon manual comes in full color.
See the picture below in its full glory:
The left page
describes what happens when Guts goes into his "berserk
mode" and the one on the right describes a feature found
in Shenmue called "key lock action" where pressing
a key that appears on the screen or not determines which way
you branch out into the story. Few extras like these is one of
the reason I often go for Japanese imports instead.
