Scar on
the bridge of his nose
Contrary
to what the TV series depicted, Guts got the wound on his nose at the
age of six. During a training exercise, Guts slid underneath Gambino's
reach and lunged the sword at him, nicking Gambino's jaw in the process
(note: another inch to the right and it would have killed him
instantly). In retaliation, Gambino took a swipe at Gatt's face but
only wounding him on the bridge of his nose.
God Hand
names
Three
of the members of God Hand (Conrad, Ubik and Slan) are named
after famous SF books or characters. Conrad is named after the
lead character in Roger Zelasny's novel "This Immortal"
(formerly known as "Call me Conrad", circa 1965). Ubik
is named after Philip K. Dick's novel of the same name (circa
1969) and Slan is patterned after the telepathic bio-engineered
beings with tendril-like hair in A. E. Vogt's novel of the same
name (circa 1940). However, Femto's name is based on a prefix
that denotes measurement scale equal to one part in one thousand
trillion (prefix: femto-).
The Dragonslayer
Godo
has had the Dragonslayer for a long time and Guts didn't know it
existed until Godo's home was attacked by a low-level God Hand disciple
(i.e., a monster) and he stumbled on it.
Hawk Survivors
Only two members of the Hawks survived the eclipse, with Guts being one of them? Guess who the other one is. -_^
Raider's
helmet
You
tell whether a Hawk soldier is a regular soldier or a Raider by looking
at his helmet. Because of the nature of his job within the Hawk
structure (i.e., as the shock troops), a Raider is given better armor
protection and in particular, his helmet has an extra jaw brace as well
as a face frame reminiscent of the ones used by Oliver Cromwell's
troops during the English Civil War. Click here to see their helmets.
Berserk
Prototype
In Miura's first version of Berserk, written when he was in college, Guts has the seal imprinted on his chest.
Griffith's
helmet
Griffith's
helmet bears a striking resemblance to the one worn by Winslow
in the movie "Phantom of the Paradise", the 1974 film
by Brian dePalma. In the movie, Winslow (played by Paul Williams)
is out to seek revenge against Swan, his former record manager
who stole his music and ruined his career and his face. Interestingly
enough, Swan has sold his soul to the devil in exchange for immortality.
Berserk
Parody
Episode
31 of Anime Complex (SD-Ah, Megami-sama!) has a Berserk motif. That
particular episode borrowed elements from Berserk episodes 1, 6 and 16
with Skuld and Urd playing the roles of Guts and Griffith,
respectively, going inside a castle that looks very much like Doldrey
to rescue their sister Belldandy. Skuld's sword and cape and Urd's
helmet have that unmistakable Berserk look to them.
Corkus's
pose
When
Corkus struck a pose in Episode 17 as they paraded through the streets
inside Wyndham Castle, this was actually a homage to Hulk Hogan's
famous pose. Check page 66 of Volume 8 of the manga and you'll see the
note below the frame. Miura must be a wrestling fan, too. While you're
at it, check out Casca's facial expression on page 67. It's much
FUNNIER than the one shown in the anime.
